Under the Canopy
Saturday morning October 28th under the ancient canopy at Sequoia Park, Maker’s Apron Creative Reuse artists will assemble a temporary installation celebrating the cycle of birth, death, decay and rebirth. Spectators can enjoy the park for free of course, while they watch the pathway under the Skywalk transform into an enlightening display made entirely from compostable plant materials.
Artists will begin their work at 9:00 am, placing seeds, flowers, vegetables and vegetation, building intricate designs. At noon, photographers will capture the moment and the art from the Skywalk at the Sequoia Park Zoo. After that, all the materials which were brought in will be swept up like they were never there.
“Our hope is to get people thinking about waste.” says artist and Maker’s Apron Director, Kati Texas. “If we can get their attention with something beautiful, then we can talk about the materials making up that beautiful thing.”
Maker’s Apron has teamed up with KEET TV’s Create channel to host community art events and educate people about the “4 R’s” of waste reduction: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot. Under the Canopy focuses on that often neglected fourth “R,” Rot. Organic waste comprises 18% of the material found in landfills, making plant and food waste the third largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Composting at home or through local services can turn that potential harm into healthy, plentiful plant food.
Although this event is free and open to all, spectators who send in an RSVP to KEET TV will earn some special swag and a gift certificate for arts and crafts supplies at Maker’s Apron Creative Reuse. Find the link at KEET.org/events.
