3rd Annual Laura Mahan Day
You are invited you to join us on Tuesday August 6th, 2024, at Humboldt Redwoods State Park in celebration of the 3rd Annual Laura Mahan Day, which also happens to be the park's 103rd birthday!
From 12pm-3pm at Founders Grove and the Laura Mahan Plaque- take a walk down the Mahan Trail and learn about her life and legacy with stationed park staff and a timeline along the way.
Kids even get to become Jr. Rangers once they get to the plaque!
Who was Laura Perrot Mahan?
She was the first president of the Women’s Save the Redwood League, who helped to galvanize thousands of women from all over the county, state and country to help prevent the untimely demise of all old growth redwoods over 100 years ago.
Laura Mahan and the women’s contributions to protecting redwoods go beyond financial; they did most of, if not all of the grassroots work that elevated the redwood conservation movement into the public sphere. Despite obstacles of the times, like sexism, and not being able to vote, just to name a few, they were still able to save over 25% of the existing old growth we have left today.
Directions: Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Founders Grove and Laura Mahan Plaque Trail.
Take US 101 exit #663 South Fork/ Honeydew to the Avenue of the Giants (~mile marker 20.39).
You can access the event from either Auto Stop #5 or Founders Grove Trailhead, where event staff will be stationed to direct you. Hike is about 1/2-mile one way from either side.
FREE event open to the public and all ages.
